Roughly 50 cars have been covered with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Cars, building surfaces and mailboxes were vandalized, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they reported in a release.
Police report they were alerted late on Wednesday night, when a individual discovered that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored liquid.
The fluid had been drawn in the form of a Nazi symbol, they stated.
Police then found numerous other smeared vehicles and house walls in the surrounding area.
These symbols are banned in Germany under laws banning the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police say preliminary tests show the liquid was most likely human bodily fluid.
"There is still no lead as to its origin; officials are currently not informed of any injuries in relation with the incident," they added.
City officials said they were trying "to resolve the case" and have asked to the community for information.
A high-ranking official said the attack made him without words and had to be solved promptly.
"This act hits the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the extremist terrorist attack half a decade ago," he stated on social media, mentioning the death of nine victims by a gunman aiming at residents of foreign heritage in 2020.
